After moving to Portland, ME I became interested in traveling uphill using skis fitted with special bindings and skins. In particular, I was interested in learning more about Skimo (a.k.a. ski mountaineering or Randonnée). I had previously noticed that former US Cyclocross champion, Tim Johnson, had become involved in Skimo through SkimoEast, an organization he started with three friends.

New England

After moving to Portland I learned about the Granite Backcountry Alliance and Ski The Whites. Ski the Whites is a shop located at Black Mountain and run by Andrew Drummond.

Huts

• Camden Hills ski shelter (see Portland Herald article), which is on a trail more appropriate for nordic skiing, but unfortunately it is also used by snowmobiles

Races

Andrew currently runs three races every week. He started Friday Night Lights at Black Mountain during the 2017-2018 season. For the 2018-2019 season he started a race at Cranmore on Wednesdays and Skiing to the Moon at Shawnee on Thursday nights.

Lost Valley holds a skimo race on Tuesday nights (see Lost Valley Skimo).
